McNary Dam, Plymouth, Washington

Garco WEMCO, A Joint Venture, was hired by the US Army Corps of Engineers to perform the complete replacement of two existing Navigation Lock Cranes that were originally built in 1953. The project entailed the design and manufacturing of two new 50-ton capacity cranes as well as two lifting beams. The design featured an aerodynamic and weather-tight cab with a 480V, 3-phase, 60Hz, alternating current system power source. Each crane was also fitted with a whip boom that is adjustable up to 45° from the main boom axis. The accompanying lifting beams each have a capacity of 37.5 tons or 75,000 lbs.  A large structural concrete foundation was also designed and installed to transfer the load moment down into the dam to reduce the reactions at the navlock deck.

Disassembly of the existing Navigation Lock Cranes was a substantial undertaking. Each piece was carefully removed and lowered to the platform 40 feet below the crane deck.
